Within Collins Aerospace, our Situational Awareness Software Engineering team develops and maintains critical flight‑deck solutions that enhance how pilots visualize and understand their environment. Our portfolio includes the Synthetic Vision System (SVS), Airport Moving Map (AMM), Integrated Flight Information System (IFIS), and Combined Vision System (CVS)—products that deliver real‑time terrain awareness, airport‑layout guidance, flight information, and advanced vision capabilities. As a Software Engineer I, you will contribute to the embedded software that powers these systems, helping deliver the next generation of situational‑awareness products for commercial, business, and military platforms. What You Will Do   Contribute to the design, development, implementation, integration, and verification of embedded avionics software for SVS, AMM, IFIS, and CVS. Apply critical thinking to safety‑critical challenges that influence how pilots operate and navigate aircraft. Implement software features in languages such as C and Python, following established coding standards and engineering processes. Develop and review software requirements, ensuring clarity, correctness, and traceability. Support verification activities through the creation and execution of requirements‑based tests. Participate in certification activities following DO‑178C guidelines and collaborate closely with systems, hardware, and certification engineering teams. Improve team efficiency through emerging development practices, automation, and AI‑assisted engineering tools. Demonstrate ownership of assigned tasks by proactively communicating progress, identifying roadblocks early, and understanding how your work contributes to overall program milestones. What You Will Learn   How to develop and verify embedded, safety‑critical avionics software used by pilots worldwide. How SVS, AMM, IFIS, and CVS integrate into modern flight‑deck architectures. The fundamentals of DO‑178C software certification, ARP4754A systems processes, and requirements‑based engineering. Best practices for writing requirements, implementing embedded software, and conducting rigorous verification activities. How to apply avionics domain knowledge to real engineering tasks and build a foundation for long‑term technical growth. Experience working within CI/CD development pipelines and exposure to automation and AI‑enhanced engineering tools. How to collaborate effectively with experienced systems, hardware, and certification engineers. A strong foundation for a future career in aerospace software engineering. Qualifications You Must Have Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) major obtained by start date Familiarity with software development fundamentals and the ability to learn regulated development environments. Experience with at least one modern programming language, preferably C or Python. Ability to follow technical instructions and consistently produce high‑quality work. Strong internal communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a collaborative team. U.S. citizenship (required for access to sensitive program information). Qualifications We Prefer Experience developing embedded software or working in real‑time systems.  Knowledge of or interest in avionics systems, safety‑critical software, or aerospace engineering. Familiarity with DO‑178C or other regulated development or verification processes.   Exposure to CI/CD pipelines, DevOps workflows, or software‑automation methodologies. Experience with Python, C, Git, or Linux‑based development environments. Demonstrated adaptability, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn and take ownership.
