General Accountant I ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT The General Accountant I performs entry‑level accounting functions to support accurate financial reporting, compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and adherence to internal control requirements. Responsibilities may include accounts payable processing, fixed asset accounting support, and general ledger account reconciliations, based on departmental needs and individual assignment. Under general supervision, the incumbent completes routine accounting tasks, prepares and maintains supporting documentation, assists with research and issue resolution, and supports month‑end close and audit activities. All General Accountant I positions are expected to participate in cross‑training and provide coverage support across accounting functions to ensure operational continuity. Essential Responsibilities Accounts Payable Support Enter and process vendor invoices in accordance with established policies and approval requirements. Verify accuracy of invoice coding to appropriate general ledger accounts and cost centers. Assist with resolution of routine invoice discrepancies, vendor inquiries, and payment issues under supervision. Support payment processing activities in compliance with internal controls and timelines. Fixed Asset Accounting Support Assist with fixed asset recordkeeping, including asset additions, disposals, transfers, and depreciation support. Participate in asset tagging, inspections, or physical inventories as required. Maintain supporting documentation related to fixed asset activity and ensure records align with established policies. Identify basic discrepancies related to asset records and escalate issues as appropriate. General Ledger Reconciliation Account Support Assist with preparation and posting of routine journal entries under supervision. Prepare routine balance sheet and operating account reconciliations (e.g., cash, clearing/suspense, prepaid/accruals, payables, fixed assets). Support month‑end close activities by completing assigned tasks timely and accurately. Provide documentation and support for internal and external audit requests. Comply with accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and record retention requirements. Cross-Training and Coverage Responsibilities Participate in cross‑training across Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, and General Ledger reconciliation functions. Provide coverage support outside of primary assignment during peak workloads, staff absences, or business needs. Maintain working knowledge of departmental accounting processes to support operational continuity and team effectiveness. Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational objectives. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and accept feedback. Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and basic reporting tools. Education Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field required. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred. Equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience will be considered. Equivalent Experience One to three years of accounting or financial operations experience preferred. Relevant experience may include accounts payable processing, fixed asset support, account reconciliations, or related accounting functions. Entry‑level candidates with strong academic credentials, internships, or related financial operations experience will be considered.
